The Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) is not going away even though it contains some dramatic flaws. A lot of folks would like to see it cancelled all together, but it will only be changed to suit political reality. The whole reason for ObamaCare is to stimulate the public to have health insurance through the use of the “stick and the carrot.” Since the president and congress felt that 10% of the population is not responsible enough, they needed to pass a law that would make it so.
Here are my recommended changes that need immediate consideration to make ObamaCare work:
- More choice for people who are looking to buy health insurance for the first time or need to replace a policy that the Affordable Care Act rendered illegal. Most of the approved health insurance policies are not affordable for middle class earners. Why be forced to buy a Lexus when all you need (and can afford) is a Subaru?
- Open enrollment now so people can get a health policy anytime. Did you know that you can’t buy one now? Yes, the government has closed off the market until November 15th. That just doesn’t make any sense to a person that has just figured out they are going to be fined 1% of their income for ignoring ObamaCare regulations.
The federal government has spent more promoting this new health insurance scheme to reach 10% of the population than all the health insurance companies combined have spent on marketing in the last 5 years.
ObamaCare has not made much progress for all the effort and taxpayer money spent.
I’ll have more to say later, when the real enrollment numbers are in. I predict the net effect of all that effort will be a very small net gain in insured populace.
