Today we are celebrating a great victory for conservation and more specifically for wild salmon! The voters in Alaska passed the Bristol Bay Forever Initiative by nearly a 2 to 1 margin with 65% in favor and 35% opposed.
With the passage of The Bristol Bay Forever Initiative, the existing law passed back in 1972 will be amended and will now ensure that “large-scale metallic sulfide mining operation(s) will not constitute danger to the fishery within the Bristol Bay Fisheries Reserve.” This standard of no “danger to the fishery” will apply not only to the Pebble Mine, but to any potential large-scale sulfide mine in the Reserve. Moreover, you helped put in place a long-term strategy for protecting Bristol Bay’s salmon!
Majestic and practically untouched, Bristol Bay, Alaska provides spawning grounds for half of the world’s wild sockeye salmon.
