Alaska Native villages are in regions of formidable beauty—and formidable challenges. They are separated from each other and the state’s urban areas by vast, rugged stretches of uninhabited territory.
In the days leading up to November 4, 2014, voting-rights advocates met in Anchorage to discuss the progress of early voting in Alaska Native villages and issues that needed addressing on Election Day.
In late Ocober 2014, I headed from Anchorage to the Native village of Manokotak, in the state’s southwestern Bristol Bay region, to cover early voting there.
“We have been so remote and isolated,” said Martin. “Now, it feels like someone out there is listening.”
