The State Board of Education and Early Development will be working to implement changes both in what’s required for graduation and how students can be restrained.
The state adopted new rules for the restraint and seclusion of students, now the board will be working to implement them. The Anchorage School District says the topic is something that surfaced a couple of years ago outside of Alaska and the state is simply being proactive.
Being added to regulations already on the books are specific rules on when and how a student can be restrained and prohibits its use as punishment or as a disciplinary technique:
— A student being restrained or secluded must be monitored
— Parents are required to be notified as soon as possible following each instance of restraint or seclusion
