A state legislator critical of the Common Core education standards is hosting a symposium to call attention to their similarity to the Alaska education standards.
The Alaska Legislature’s Joint Administrative Regulation Review Committee will host a two-day symposium today and tomorrow during which speakers will share concerns about the Common Core.
The state Board of Education and Early Development adopted the new English language and mathematics standards in 2012.
The committee chairwoman, Rep. Lora Reinbold, R-Eagle River, said she called for the symposium because of her concerns about implementation of the standards.
“For about two years I was kind of open-minded, sounds like a great idea, higher standards, critical thinking, testing kids so we can compare them,” Reinbold said. “I have very, very strong concerns about the Common Core initiative, very passionate concerns.”
The Common Core is a set of education standards adopted in whole or in part by the majority of states.
The symposium will run today and Wednesday in Anchorage.

I like Reinbold. She had the…to buck the system and reject the Majority’s threats about supporting a bloated budget. All staff should be equal in legislative offices, by the way. I wish she represented the Valley.
