Americans for Prosperity Ad Attacks Berkowitz Mayoral Run

The first attack ads have appeared in the race for Anchorage mayor, with right-leaning political action committee Americans for Prosperity of Alaska tearing into Democrat Ethan Berkowitz’s record as a state lawmaker.

If you’ve listened to AM radio in Anchorage lately, you’ve heard the spots. A booming voice comes through the radio: “Has president Obama been good for Alaska?”

Then Berkowitz’s voice, saying, “Barack Obama has been a fairly centrist, maybe left-of-center president. We’ve got massive amounts of stimulus money, on balance he’s been pretty good for us.”

“Berkowitz thinks massive government spending is good for us? Maybe that’s why he voted for a state income tax and cap and trade,” the voice opines.

The commercial, part of a $15,000 ad buy according to AFP state director Jeremy Price, ends with a call for voters to consider whether the residents of Alaska’s largest city want a tax increase.

Except Barack Obama isn’t running to replace term-limited Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan. Why evoke the president’s record in a local race?

“We feel like his record is similar to President Obama,” Price said.  “We think that the issues of taxation, spending, growth of government are important to weigh in with respect to municipal, state and federal government.”

  • It would be nice to see no special interest groups meddling in local (and state) races. But I also support conservative candidates so can’t complain to much considering it’s against Berkowitz.

  • If the shoe fits…..Whether out of state group or local, he’s a policymaker with a record. No one forced him to run for mayor, so he’ll be compared to the others and he’ll be judged on how he was a legislator. That’s the process. I doubt he wins.
