Hundreds of people watched on as former Greater Anchorage Borough Mayor Jack Roderick administered the oath to Mayor-elect Ethan Berkowitz. Anchorage Assembly members, state legislators and former mayors were in the crowd at Town Square Park on Wednesday afternoon.
“With his natural energy, integrity and sincerity, my dad is the kind of guy who can lead us into this city’s second century of existence,” said Noah Berkowitz Kimmel as he introduced the new mayor.
“We are unique, we are beautiful and we are poised for even greater greatness,” Berkowitz said during his speech. “We stand on the brink of more independence and more opportunity.”Berkowitz said Anchorage has to “turn away from stale politics and forge a new way, an Anchorage way of conducting ourselves.”
“It’s our time to make a new Anchorage, an Anchorage united by the idea that we are uniquely Alaska, in a place that speaks a hundred languages and connects the world at the top of the globe,” Berkowitz said.
