Capital Flag Snatchers Turn Themselves In

The three unidentified men who scaled the Alaska State Capitol building and stole the U.S. and Alaska flags have turned themselves in to police. Juneau police spokesman Lt. David Campbell said the suspects called police and identified themselves Tuesday morning. Two of the three men, ages 24 and 26, then went to the police station later in the day to be interviewed.

They were not arrested on the spot, but criminal charges are forthcoming against all three. Campbell said police will be asking city prosecutors to charge them with misdemeanor larceny and criminal trespass.

On Tuesday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced via Instagram that she had found a new 50-star recruit to fly in place of the stolen flag. “I’m sending Governor (Bill) Walker a new replacement American flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol,” Murkowski wrote in the social media post.

Walker was grateful for the donation. “Thank you to Senator Murkowski for sending me a new American Flag to hang over the Capitol Building in Juneau,” he told the Empire in an email. “This is proof that a senseless act of vandalism cannot suppress our Alaskan spirit and great patriotism for our country.”
