Alaskans are making less money now than they did in 1989, a new study by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development has found.
Adjusting for inflation, the state’s median yearly income has fallen from the equivalent of $49,000 in 1989 to $45,000 today, the report found. Sixty percent of those earning low wages, meantime, are women.
State economist Neal Fried said most of the job growth in the 1990s was tied to the service sector — retail jobs, for example — that traditionally pay lower wages.
