Alaskan contractors hired 700 construction workers in September, temporarily making it the fastest growing construction state in the entire country, a recent report has found.
According to the Associated General Contractors of America, the industry grew 3.9 percent in just one month. Employment experts in Anchorage said although the job numbers are optimistic, the report doesn’t indicate if a building boom is in the future.
“Seeing all these new buildings and lots of road construction this year, my guess is most people have that feeling that ‘Wow, it seems to be a pretty busy construction season,’” said economist Neal Fried with the Alaska Department of Labor.
Fried said the volatile nature of the construction industry makes future predictions hard to read, but also notes that 2015 has frequently seen steady month to month job growth.
“We have 5.6 percent [growth rate] over last year, which is pretty healthy… It’s above average nationally,” said Fried.
