Sitka Fifth Grader Lights Capitol Christmas Tree from Alaska

Alaska’s Christmas gift to the nation was lit up Wednesday evening. The 74-foot Lutz spruce from the Chugach National Forest is shining bright in the middle of the U.S. Capitol building’s west lawn.

There are 2,000 ornaments on the tree. Each was made by Alaskan school children, artists and tribes. But the spruce is not only a gift, it’s a reminder of what people can do when they work together.

The tree was lit with help from a Soldotna fifth-grader Anna DeVolld. She was awarded the opportunity after an essay she submitted was selected from among hundreds of others from Alaska children.

“I was feeling very excited and I just couldn’t wait to turn it on,” Anna said.
