Traini to Face Assembly Election Opponent

Chair vs. Chair: Shirley Nelson, chair of the Municipality of Anchorage Budget Advisory Commission, has filed a Letter of Intent with APOC today to run against Assembly Chair Dick Traini.

Nelson is the business owner of Blue Sky Reading (www.blueskyreading.com) and a retired educator. Her community service roots run deep, and notables have stepped forward to support her, names of whom forthcoming.

Word has it Shirley will have strong GOP support across the spectrum, particularly from fiscal conservatives. Defeating Dick Traini will be an uphill battle, but Assembly district demographics suggest it’s a winnable seat for a moderate up right-leaning Republican.

The Assembly is non-partisan.

Traini was elected, for the first time, in 1991. He was chosen to serve as chairman of the Assembly several times beginning in December 1993 through May 1995. He filled this leadership role more than any other Assembly member, serving again from April 2001 to April 2005 and April 2010 to April 2011; working with six mayors and nearly 35 Assembly members. During his tenure as an elected official, he also earned a Masters in Public Administration and a Professional Planner Certification in Urban Planning.
