The Denali Borough Assembly unanimously approved a resolution on Wednesday night that states it “will not make any capital project requests” for the upcoming year. The resolution was authored by Denali Mayor Clay Walker. In an interview Thursday, he said it saves everyone’s time to not ask for something that has no chance of being funded.
“We, along with municipalities, put in our capital projects last year and those weren’t funded and it looks, of course, worse this year,” he said. “Last year, we were bemoaning oil going under $70 a barrel, and now it’s gone under $30. It’s going to be incredibly tight times.”
Denali’s blank capital project wish list was good news to Rep. Steve Thompson, a Fairbanks Republican who co-chairs the House Finance Committee and oversees the capital budget.
