Governor, Mayor, and You Celebrate Alaska Flag Day Today

Today is Alaska Flag Day. When I describe our State’s flag to guests that come here and when traveling outside, I always tell them our flag is the only flag designed by heaven and not by man. For a child, Benny Benson, pulled the design out of the night sky, and forever we are not just waving man’s idea of a sovereignty but a higher ideal. Ours is a flag that represents the hope of heaven. We have eight stars, signifying the essence of a large family. This to me is what our Alaska flag means. Come out and celebrate today with the Governor and Anchorage’s new mayor. (see below) ~ Eugene Harnett, APE Editor

Governor, Mayor, and You Celebrate Alaska Flag Day Today

On Thursday AK Child & Family is celebrating its anniversary and rich history, with an evening full of festivities focused on eight stars of gold on a field of blue. Denis McCarville with AK Child & Family joined Daybreak to talk about the Alaska Flag Day Celebration and why the state flag is so significant to its history.

“Our territorial governor back in the ’20s had a contest for youth to design the flag,” McCarville said. “Little Benny Benson at the time, a 13-year-old, lived at the Jesse Lee Home and designed the flag. So we celebrate the flag day every year.”

In celebration of 125 years, there will be food and music entertainment including appearances from Gov. Bill Walker, his wife the first lady and Anchorage’s new mayor, Ethan Berkowitz who will be scooping ice cream for those attending the event.

The Alaska Flag Day Celebration run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 4600 Abbott Road. Admission is $20 for a family or $5 per person. Free shuttle service will be provided for those parking at Service High School.
