“Summer School” Required for Legislators

Tough teacher; that is, if the Fairbanks News Miner were the Legislature’s teacher this session, handing out grades. The State’s lawmakers would have to forego vacation fun and get right into summer school. Which is what they will be doing this summer, anyway, hammering out ideas for balancing the State’s budget and finishing out their other assignments. Now, read the teachers comments.

Given the end of the academic and legislative sessions, it seems an appropriate time to release some unofficial grades for the Alaska Legislature and its performance so far this year.

Interior Energy Project: A-

This was the strongest work by the Legislature

Natural gas pipeline: D

The only reason this isn’t an outright F is that, so far, there’s no evidence the AK LNG line has been adversely affected by all of the bickering.

Marijuana: B

managed to complete the two essential tasks

Medicaid: Incomplete

Signs so far aren’t good

Erin’s Law: Incomplete

the majority’s lackadaisical attitude with regard to the bill’s fate

Budget: C- (Partial grade)

deserve credit for making sizable and sometimes unpopular budget reductions
