Prepare the Political Travel Bags to Juneau

Alaska citizens! Have you noticed–there’s a new sheriff in town. The Walker/Mallott “Unity Ticket” has swept into power as the governor and lieutenant governor set up shop. Make your plans now to visit your legislators and state officials during the “session”, which starts on Jan. 15, 2015.

Many of our legislators are picking out curtains for their new offices. There are new minority and majority leaders in the state house, for example.  All I can say is this is setting up to be a lively session. As a CITIZEN, you should make plans to PARTICIPATE. Here are a few buzzwords to get your interest:

STAY: There are several hotels downtown within walking distance to the capitol building including the Silverbow Inn, the Goldbelt, the Baranof and the Prospector. EAT: The Sandpiper for breakfast. The Island Pub in Juneau for lunch. SALT for dinner (next to the Silverbow, btw). PLAY: Ski at Eaglecrest. Drive out to Mendenhall and hike around the perimeter of the glacier. See a play at Perseverance Theater. Drive out to the Shrine of St. Therese north of Auke Bay.

Call your legislators ahead of time to make appointments. Take time to see the House of Representatives during their session–and be introduced by your legislator! Take the kids.
