Berkowitz Overwhelms

The night was short. By 11 PM Demboski conceded. Ethan Berkowitz will take leadership over the Municipality of Anchorage with an overwhelming majority vote. Both candidates thank their volunteers.

Demboski gathered with supporters at her downtown headquarters where she told Channel 2’s Caslon Hatch that she had reached out to Berkowitz.“I have already called Ethan, I left a message congratulating him and I asked him to call me back,” said Demboski, who continues to represent Eagle River/Chugiak on the city Assembly and vowed to hold Berkowitz accountable to her supporters.

“I’m proud of the race we ran, and despite the challenges within the media — there were issues, no doubt — but despite those, we overcame and put forward a strong message,” she said.

Despite the divisive nature of a runoff  that grew increasingly bruising in the weeks leading to the election, Berkowitz said he was optimistic when asked if he could connect with the 41 percent of voters who cast ballots against him.“People are going to have to answer that question for themselves,” Berkowitz said. “I hope the kind of person I am, and the kind of leader I hope to become, is someone who appeals to both sides.”

”Just about the only thing both Berkowitz and Demboski seemed to agree on was the value of the volunteers who devoted time and effort to their campaigns.“They did an incredible job,” Berkowitz said. “We were all out door-knocking, sign-waving, and they made such an incredible difference.”“The one thing I take away is the love and support of all the people in this room,” Demboski said. “You have these races and you come together afterwards — that’s what you have to do.”
